Obituary for Steven Oren Selby
Steven Oren Selby was born March 28, 1942 in Oakland, California to Norman Bud Selby and Mabel M. Kolb. He passed away unexpectedly at his residence in Shenandoah, Iowa, August 3, 2021, at the age of 79 years, 4 months and 3 days. He made many friends and was known for his sense of humor.
As a baby and toddler Steve and his family lived in Oakland. After his mother and father divorced he moved with his mother and brother back to Nebraska to be near her family. They lived in South Omaha where Steve and his brother, Bill, attended their first years of grade school. While their mother worked as a waitress at the famous Blackstone Hotel the boys were cared for by two young ladies from Blanchard, Iowa, who were attending secretarial school.
The boys sometimes rode a street car downtown to take swimming lessons at the YMCA. Their mother remarried and traded her apartment house for a farm in southwest Iowa east of Farragut, Iowa.
The boys attended school at the Farragut Community School while growing up on their farm. He and his brother often worked for a farmer friend, Orville Morhain, who lived just down the road, milking cows, putting up hay and chopping weeds out of bean fields. Orville introduced them to horses starting with a pony named Paint. As they got older they moved up to larger horses, Smokey a buckskin and Queeny a palomino. They continued raising, showing and breaking horses. Steve enjoyed raising horses and especially watching the new born colts. He sometimes had a hard time
letting go of his horses as, he became attached to them.
Steve was known for his hard working work ethics. Over the years Steve worked painting bridges and various buildings for Bud Turnbull Contractor and worked part time tending bar at the Red Oak Tap. For over 30 years Steve was employed by Eveready Manufacturing Company in Red Oak, Iowa and received special recognition and gifts for working 25 years never missing a day of work.
He was married to Annie Jones and to this union one daughter, Mashelle was born. After this marriage was dissolved he continued to put his enjoyment into raising horses, fishing and spending time with friends. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles #3651 and Fraternal Order of Elks #1122.
He was preceded in death by his father, mother Mabel Browning, stepfather, Ray Browning and
sister-in-law Sandy Selby.
Survivors include: his daughter, Mashelle Medina, granddaughter, Alexa Medina, both from Queen Creek, Arizona, brother and wife, Bill and Brenda Selby from Shenandoah, nephews, cousins and many friends.
