Steven Carl Leighty, son of Ivan Harper and Ida Cathrina (Vaterodt) Leighty, was born on October 4, 1952, in Ulysses, Kansas. He entered into eternal peace on Monday, November 4, 2019 athis home in Hamburg, Iowa following a courageous bout with cancer at the age of 67 years, 1 month.
A celebration of Steve's life will be held at a later date. Memorials may be directed to the family. Nishna Valley Funeral and Cremation Services is in charge of arrangements.
His early life was spent growing up in Ulysses, Kansas, where he attended the Ulysses Community Schools. Following high school, he went to work in the oil fields in Texas and Oklahoma.
On February 18, 1998, Steve was united in marriage to Ethel R. Haskell at Penrose, Colorado. They made their home in Penrose and continued to live there until moving to Hamburg, Iowa in 2018 after retirement.
Through the years, Steve worked in the construction industries. He last worked for Fremont Paving and Redi-Mix in Canon City, Colorado as their Batch Man before retiring. Steve loved fishing and hunting and enjoyed building furniture for Ethel and in recent years, making walking canes.
Preceding him in death were his parents; and three brothers, Charles, Clyde and George Leighty. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Ethel Leighty of Hamburg, IA; two brothers, Lester Leighty of Salina, KS and John Leighty of Spring Hill, KS; sister, Pearl Brown of Wichita, KS; two step-daughters, Beverly and Randy Jo Mings; two step-sons, Kenneth T. Haskell, Jr, and Charles H. Diehl; other relatives and many friends.
