Wilma “Jeanne” (Burns) Casteel of Shenandoah, Iowa and formerly a long-time resident of Essex, Iowa peacefully entered into eternal rest on Saturday, January 16, 2021 at her home in Shenandoah at the age of 92 years, 6 months, 17 days.
Jeanne was born on June 30, 1928 to John E. and Mable Marie (Morin) Burns in Parnell, Missouri. She spent her childhood and teen years in the Parnell area.
On May 29, 1949, Jeanne was united in marriage to Norman G. Casteel in McMinnville, Oregon. Many moves came in their early years together. There were stops in Wichita, Kansas, Des Moines, Iowa and Yorktown, Iowa before settling in Essex, Iowa in 1957. They finally found their home.
Jeanne worked at the Carbon Battery Plant in Red Oak, Iowa for a time. She then was employed at the Farmer’s Telephone Company in Essex until her retirement. In August of 2010, her and Norman moved to Shenandoah to live out their remaining years. She was a long-time member of the Presbyterian Church in Essex and the Essex American Legion Auxiliary.
Preceding Jeanne in death were her parents; loving husband, Norman of 71 years; an infant daughter; five sisters, Thelma Mercer, Leaska Black, Melba Wright, Bonnie Hammond and Clarice Berg; and one brother, Robin Burns.
Jeanne is survived by her sons, David and wife Carla of Lake Wylie, South Carolina, Chris and wife Janie of Shenandoah, Iowa and Ed and wife Cathy of Mount Pleasant, Texas; six grandchildren; five great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Winifred Burns of Maryville, Missouri; many nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
A celebration of Jeanne's life will be held at a later date this spring.
