Eugenia (Ginger) Rhea (Shepherd) Hackett, daughter of Gene and Louise (Boren) Shepherd, was born on March 23, 1946 in Arkansas. She entered into eternal rest on Tuesday morning, March 9, 2021 in Mesa, Arizona, with her daughter, Heather by her side at the age of 74 years, 11 months, 14 days.
On April 25, 1969, Ginger was united in marriage to Fred Nathan Hackett at Poteau, Oklahoma. They made their home in Shenandoah, Iowa, following their marriage and were blessed with two daughters, Shawnette and Heather.
Throughout her many years in Shenandoah, Ginger was involved in both the community and the family business, Hackett Funeral Home. She was a member of the Home and Garden Club, working to promote the beauty and charm of Shenandoah to residents and visitors alike. Ginger was also an AFS parent (sending Heather to Greece in 1990) and an AFS host parent (hosting Francesco Gospari from Italy and Christian Burmudez from Costa Rica). In addition, Ginger and Fred were members of the Southwest Iowa Theater Group and supported many of their productions. She was a member of the Shenandoah First United Methodist Church and was instrumental in the Youth Club program. She helped organize weekly activities and taught Bible classes.
One of her greatest talents was home design and decorating. Ginger loved to make her home beautiful, and her friends loved that she was willing to help them make their homes beautiful as well.
In 2000, Ginger and Fred moved to Chandler, Arizona, to be close to their grandchildren, Emma, Riley, Max and Brody. Ginger was a dedicated grandmother to her grandchildren and treasured the time they spent together. She volunteered at Dobson Academy where her grandchildren attended school. Even with her failing health, Ginger assisted Brody with his homework every day. Her grandchildren’s education was extremely important to her.
Preceding Ginger in death was her husband of 51 years, Fred Hackett; parents; and brother. Left to cherish her memory are her two daughters, Heather Hackett of Chandler, AZ and Shawnette Hackett of Tacoma, WA; six grandchildren, Emma Martin and fiancé Brett Roberts of Shenandoah, IA, Riley Martin of Omaha, NE, Maxwell Hackett of Chandler, AZ, Brody Hackett-Wilson of Chandler, AZ, Charlie Curtis of Salt Lake City, UT and Evan Daniel of Tacoma, WA. Ginger also leaves behind her chosen family, Joe and Jenni Martin of Shenandoah, IA and chosen grandchildren, JJ and Marlowe Martin of Shenandoah, IA. Ginger and Jenni had a very special bond. Jenni opened her home and her heart to Fred and Ginger and included them as her family.
