Catherine Marie (Kent) Ross, 91, of Essex, Iowa, entered into peace on Sunday morning, July 4, 2021 at the Tabor Manor Care Center in Tabor, Iowa. Celebration of life memorial services for Catherine will be held on Thursday, July 15, 2021 at 11:00 am at the Essex Presbyterian Church with Pastor Rick Sleyster officiating. The family will greet relatives and friends with visitation from 5:00 to 7:00 pm Wednesday evening, July 14, 2021 at Nishna Valley Funeral and Cremation Service in Shenandoah. Memorials in Catherine's name are being directed to either the Essex Presbyterian Church, the Essex Firefighter's Association, or to the Tabor Manor Care Center. Inurnment will be in the Essex Cemetery.
Catherine Marie (Kent) Ross, 91 years of age, died peacefully in her sleep on July 4, 2021 at Tabor Manor Care Center with her husband, George, daughter, Cindy, sister, Carlene, and niece, Robin spending many last hours at her side. She died of complications related to Alzheimer's.
On June 23, 1930, Catherine was born at a cabin in Big Lake, Missouri to parents, Jennie (Lundy) Kent and Carl Kent who preceded her in death. She has one surviving sibling, Carlene Caton and her youngest sister Rosie Gibson died in 1975. She attended Fortescue High School in Fortescue, Missouri with the Class of 1948. She then attended Northwest Missouri State Teachers College in Maryville. She began her teaching career in a one room schoolhouse east of Shenandoah, Iowa (Frog Pond). It was while teaching here that she met her future husband.
On October 20, 1950, Catherine married George W. Ross in Shenandoah, Iowa, five days before he left for Korea. When he returned from the service, Catherine helped George open and run George’s Garage in Essex. She passed her love of flowers to her three daughters, Sheryl (husband Steve) Benedict, Cindy Agee and Janet (husband Robert Young) Williamson.
In 1967, Catherine embarked on a new career working as a postal clerk in Essex. She retired from the post office in 1993 and later worked as a clerk at the China and Glass Shop in Shenandoah. She was a wonderful cook who spoiled her husband and kids with home cooked meals and desserts. She was a talented seamstress who made most of the kids’ clothes. In addition, she taught herself to draw and paint and made many beautiful paintings for her family and friends to enjoy. She enjoyed reading, working puzzles, staying active in her garden, and walking, walking and more walking.
In addition to those mentioned above, she also leaves her grandchildren and spouses, Meshara (Jacques) Gilbert, Kyle (Lynnette) King, Mike (Jodi) Agee, Jr., Ross (Jenny Lee) Agee, Travis Agee and Nathan (Elizabeth) Williamson. Seven surviving great-grandchildren, Kalabria Gilbert (Joshua) Lemire, Logan Gilbert, Kyle Story and Bryson King, Mike Agee, III, Gabriel Agee and Beatrix Agee. Also surviving are sister-in-law Donna Ross, as well as many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews, as well as Catherine and Georges' special friends Delaine (Doodles) and Hazel Resh.
Those not previously stated who preceded her in death are sister-in-law, Orpha Rose Kite and husband Bob; brothers-in-law, Myron Ross and Larry (Hoot) Gibson; and sons-in-law, Mike Agee and Dwight Williamson. She cultivated many lifelong friendships over coffee with family and friends who have passed before her and was very sad when Smokem the cat went to heaven.
