Obituary for Jean Herrman

Dixie Jean (O’Neal) Herrman was born on November 1, 1925 near Tarkio, Missouri to Gilbert Lee O’Neal and Rosa Ellen (Nigh) O’Neal, the fifth and youngest child of that union. She peacefully entered into rest on Monday morning, April 2, 2018 at the Tabor Manor Care Center at the age of 92 years, 5 months, 1 day.

Early in her life, her family moved into Page County, Iowa where Jean went to school. She graduated from Coin High School with the Class of 1943. Jean met Darrel Dean Herrman after graduation, during WWII, while walking around Shenandoah. The couple was united in marriage on February 15, 1948 at the Locust Grove Methodist Church. They began farming March 1, 1948 in rural Fremont County near the Locust Grove Church in Locust Grove Township. Darrel also farmed with his father Leo on the family farm and shortly after that they moved to rural Westboro, Missouri where they were long-term tenants on a farm owned by the late Frank Hopkins, a large landowner in the area and benefactor of several colleges including Tarkio College. Darrel continued to farm with his father until Leo died in 1982 and Darrel took over the farming of the family farm. They remained on the Westboro farm until early 1976 when they moved to Westboro and lived on an in-town acreage. They lived in Westboro until 2010 when they entered the Tabor Manor Nursing home.

Jean was a homemaker, farm wife and a mother to their three sons, Larry Darrel Herrman, Leslie Leo Herrman and Dale Lee Herrman. Jean was a loyal attendee of the Locust Grove Methodist church for over 60 years. She loved the church and the WSCS organization and served in multiple capacities in her years there. She also served several capacities in Westboro, Missouri, especially during the Centennial celebration. She was thrilled to be a grandmother and a mother-in-law and greatly enjoyed seeing family and friends. An avid quilter, she quilted often with Eva Herrman, her mother-in-law. Jean loved to sing the old hymns and popular music of her era.

Preceding Jean in death were her parents, Gilbert and Rose, and her four siblings Lyle, Grace, Mabel and Lewis; husband Darrel died in 2010 after 62 years of marriage; and son Dale died in 2015.

Left to cherish her memory are her two sons, Leslie Herrman of Independence, Missouri and Larry Herrman and wife Charlotte of Glenwood, Iowa; four grandchildren, Patrick Herrman and wife Rose of Glenwood, Matthew Herrman and wife Marie of Omaha, Nebraska, Kent Herrman and CeCe Spotts of Aurora, Colorado and Annaleah Moore and husband Mike of Council Bluffs, Iowa; five great grandchildren, Clark, Avery and Gwen Herrman of Glenwood, and Declan and Ronan Herrman of Omaha; other relatives and friends.

A celebration of life funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at 11:00 AM at the Nishna Valley Funeral and Cremation Service in Shenandoah. The family will greet relatives and friends with visitation one prior to the service Saturday at the funeral home beginning at 10:00 AM. Burial will be in the Locust Grove Cemetery. Memorials in Jean's name are being directed to the Locust Grove Cemetery Fund.
