Obituary for Marvel J. Skinner

Celebration of life funeral services will be held on Friday, March 23, 2018 at 10:30 AM at the Nishna Valley Funeral Home with Pastor Humberto Gonzalez officiating. The family will greet relatives and friends with visitation one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials in Marvel's name are being directed to the Shenandoah First United Methodist Church. Burial will take place in the Rose Hill Cemetery, next to her husband Merrill Skinner.

Marvel JoAnn (Lorimor) Skinner, daughter of Joseph Edward and Grace Evelyn (Myers) Lorimor, was born on October 21, 1931, near Imogene (Fremont County), Iowa , the oldest of six siblings. She entered into eternal rest on Wednesday morning, March 20, 2018 at Elm Heights Care Center in Shenandoah, Iowa, at the age of 86 years, 4 months, 27 days.

Growing up, Marvel attended Sunny Slope, a one room country school, near Imogene through the 8th grade. She attended high school at Farragut, graduating from Farragut High School with the Class of 1949. After graduation, she moved to Shenandoah, where she was employed with the City of Shenandoah. In June of 1995, after declining health, she retired after 44 ½ years of employment with the City.

In 1953, Marvel met her husband, Merrill, while home on leave from the Air Force. On December 24, 1953 they became engaged before Christmas Eve Services at the First United Methodist Church in Shenandoah. They were united in marriage on December 23, 1954, at Red Oak, Iowa, with the groom’s uncle Rev. H. G. Boon officiating. Merrill had been called home on leave due to the terminal illness of his father. It was his father’s last wish to see them married and they were married on the 25th wedding anniversary of his parents. Merrill’s father passed away six months after the wedding. To this union one son, David Edward Skinner, was born.

After moving to Shenandoah, Marvel was baptized and became a member of the Shenandoah First United Methodist Church in 1952. As a young lady, Marvel attended a Young Singles Church Group and was a member of the Shen-Y-Ettes. She was also a member of the Church Circle, the American Legion Post #88 Auxiliary and Business and Professional Women. Marvel’s hobbies were crocheting and embroidering. She enjoyed meeting with the Angel Quilters at the church on Thursday mornings. She also enjoyed country western music, polka music and gospel music (the Gaither’s). She was very close to her four sisters and they enjoyed spending days together just having a good time, especially on birthdays.

With her health on the decline, Marvel nearly had a fatal heart attack in 2002 and was in Elm Heights for 19 months, finally returning home in July of 2004. She was able to take care of Merrill until his death in September of 2007. Not long after though, Marvel entered Elm Heights again, where she resided since August of 2008.

Preceding Marvel in death were parents; husband, Merrill; brother, Duane Lorimor; sisters-in-law, Alice Thomason and Lillian Skinner; brother-in-law, Richard “Dick” Phipps; and niece, Beth Phipps.

Left to cherish her memory are her son, David Skinner and wife Vickie; four sisters, Marilyn Phipps, Merna Dobbs and husband William, Lavone Johnson and husband Arlen and Loraine Manchester and husband Eldon; sister-in-law, Evelyn Lorimor; two granddaughters, Rhonda Athen and husband Darin and Amie Perkins and husband Cory; grandson, Jody Webster, Jr. and wife Jeannette; six great grandsons, Chase Shade, Ethan Webster, Landon Webster, Peyton Athen, Dalton Athen and Grayson Perkins; other relatives and many friends.
