Obituary for Richard D. Powers

Richard Dean Powers, son of George Harvey and Evelyn Mae (Scott) Powers was born on May 23, 1945 in Hamburg, Iowa. He entered into eternal rest on Saturday, October 6, 2018 at Garden View Care Center in Shenandoah, Iowa at the age of 73 years, 4 months, 13 days.

His early years were spent in the Hamburg and Farragut, Iowa areas. He attended Farragut High School. In 1966, Richard enlisted in the United States Army. He spent two years in Anchorage, Alaska, where he trained to drive a tanker truck. He was honorably discharged in 1968.

After his military service he returned to southwest Iowa and became an over the road truck driver for Transcon Truck Lines in Omaha, Nebraska. He worked for Transcon for 19 years until they shut down. Richard then worked for several other trucking companies before joining Mail Contractors of America. He hauled mail from Omaha to Chicago and back for over 10 years. Due to his health, Richard was forced to retire in February of 2009.

Never knowing a stranger, Richard could make friends easily with everyone. He enjoyed watching TV, especially westerns such as Gunsmoke, Bonanza, John Wayne and Death Valley. His greatest pleasure was watching WWE Wrestling and Alaska the Last Frontier. He also loved to spend time talking to relatives and friends.

Preceding Richard in death were his parents; sister, Gloria Booher; and an infant grandson, Jacob Powers. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Linda Bain of Pacific Junction, IA; two sons, Ronald Powers and wife Deb and Jason Powers and wife Jodi, all of Council Bluffs, IA; four grandchildren, Chloe, Kody, Jessica and Jillian Powers, all of Council Bluffs, IA; step-daughter, Jill Gilbert and husband Shannon of Shenandoah; two step-granddaughters, Nichole and Natalie Gilbert of Shenandoah; brother, Steve Powers and wife Glenda of Farragut; other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 11, 2018 at 10:00 AM at the Veterans Memorial Chapel in Rose Hill Cemetery with Pastor Jack Langley officiating. The family will greet relatives and friends with visitation one hour prior to the service beginning at 9:00 AM Thursday morning at the Veterans Memorial Chapel.
