Raymond E. "Gene" Houston

July 4, 1937 ~ August 16, 2019 (age 82)

Raymond Eugene (Gene) Houston, the son of Raymond Houston and Velda Bernice (Shelby) was born in Albany, MO on July 4th, 1937. Gene entered into eternal rest on Friday August 16, 2019 in Ozark, MO at the age of 82.

A celebration of of Gene's life will be held on Friday, August 30, 2019 at 1:00 pm at the Nishna Valley Funeral and Cremation Service in Shenandoah with Pastor Jeff Schirle officiating.  A private inurnment will take place at Rose Hill Cemetery in Shenandoah.   Memorials are being directed to the family.

Gene attended school in Albany later moving to Shenandoah IA where he met and married Rozella Hall in 1959. To this union 3 children were born, Teena, Rhonda and Marrell. Gene worked at Lakes Nursery/Mount Arbor for several years before becoming production manager there for 25 years. Gene was also a member of the National Guard from 1955 to 1965 where he attained the rank of Sergeant E5, Company C, 1st Battalion, 168th Infantry. In 1988 he took a job at Douglas-Lomason (Ro-Mech) starting out as a welder for a short while before becoming 2nd shift Production Manager for 15 years before retiring in 2004. 

In his spare time Gene loved to be outdoors as much as possible. He so enjoyed caring for and feeding every living creature and critter that graced his yard. He made many hand-made feeders for the birds and butterflies, the squirrels and rabbits and deer and any other critter he could coax up to his feeders, he just took care of them all. In the summer months he loved to go fishing and camping and spending time on the lake with his family. In the winter months he was an avid hunter and often provided plenty of food for his family this way. He also enjoyed making things for his kids and grandkids to enjoy such as playhouses and go carts and teaching them to hunt and fish right alongside him. Gene enjoyed landscaping his yard with beautiful flowers, trees and plants of all kinds and could identify and pronounce most every species that he came across. Gene also had a love for photography and concentrated on nature and landscape photos as well as family photos of vacations and holiday gatherings.

~ Caring for others is what Gene's life was all about ~

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Rhonda Houston, brothers J.H., George and Jimmy Houston, sister Louise Shaw, brother-in-law Francis Shaw, and niece Janet Shaw. 

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 60 years Rozella Houston, daughter Teena Houston, son Marrell Houston and wife Karen, brother Danny Houston and wife Fran, sister Patty Shaw, granddaughter Christie Cash and husband Randy, (Mason, Connor, Adeline, Delaney), grandson Michael Houston and wife Alisa (Kailey, Jax, Emmett) grandson Kyle Porter and wife Jennifer (Clara), and many other relatives and friends.
