Mary E. Collins

July 30, 1914 ~ September 8, 2018 (age 104)

Mary Ethel (Luckiesh) Collins, daughter of Mathew Selvester and Sarah Ellen (Yocom) Luckiesh, was born on July 30, 1914 at Weston, Iowa. She entered into eternal peace on Saturday, September 8, 2018 at Elm Heights Care Center in Shenandoah, Iowa at the age of 104 years, 1 month, 9 days.

Her early life was spent growing up in Weston (northeast of Council Bluffs), where she attended country school through the eighth grade. Mary graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School with the Class of 1933. Following high school, she moved to Denver, Colorado, where she studied business at a local community college.

After receiving her education, Mary moved back to Iowa. On October 23, 1943, she was united in marriage to the love of her life, William P. Collins at Hiawatha, Kansas. Following their marriage, they moved to Paxton Ranch near Honey Creek, Iowa. She and Bill lived on and farmed Paxton Ranch consisting of over 1700 acres for over 32 years until Bill's death in 1986. Mary moved to Shenandoah, Iowa after Bill's passing to be near her sister, Pearl Almquist and her family.

Through the years, Mary was active in the Council Bluffs Eastern Star Chapter #441, Royal Neighbors #5152 and the Christian Women's Club. She was a member of the Hazel Dell United Methodist Church in Council Bluffs and later transferred her membership to the First United Methodist Church in Shenandoah. In recent years she was attending St. Mary's Catholic Church in Shenandoah. In her spare time Mary enjoyed her artwork consisting of all mediums of painting pictures and pen and ink pictures of scenery and animals. She also enjoyed scrapbooking.

Preceding Mary in death were her husband, William P. Collins; parents, Mathew and Sarah Luckiesh; sister, Pearl Almquist; brother, Joseph Luckiesh; two nieces, Mary Bengtson-Almquist and Bonnie Luckiesh; and three nephews, Daniel Bengtson, Bennett Luckiesh and Clifford Luckiesh.

Left to cherish her memory are two nieces, Joella Smith and husband Paul of Tyler, TX and Colleen Luckiesh Nelsonville, OH; two nephews, Mark Luckiesh and wife Shirley of Colo, IA and David Almquist of Petersburg, IL; one great-niece; five great nephews; and a host of friends.

Celebration of life memorial services will be held on Wednesday, September 19, 2018 at 11:00 AM at the Nishna Valley Funeral and Cremation Service in Shenandoah with Rev. Raphael Assamah officiating. Inurnment will take place in Crescent Township Cemetery, Crescent, Iowa. Memorials in Mary's name are being directed to: C/O Mary E. Collins Memorial Fund, P O Box 277, Shenandoah, IA 51601.
