Chrystal Enola (Esaias) Sandahl, daughter of Emmit Roy and Viola Mae (Griffey) Esaias was born on May 12, 1923 on a farm in Page County, Iowa.  She entered into eternal rest on Saturday morning, May 18, 2019 at Goldenrod Manor in Clarinda, Iowa at the age of 96 years, 6 days.

Her early life was spent growing up on the family farm near Yorktown, Iowa. Chrystal attended school at Mt. Zion country school through the eighth grade and then finished her education at Shenandoah High School.

On March 7, 1943, Chrystal was united in marriage to Arvid E. Sandahl at Rock Port, Missouri.  Arvid and Chrystal farmed in Page County, living all their married life in the Yorktown and Norwich area. To this union two sons, Francis and Rodney were born.  Arvid passed away in 2000, after 57 years of marriage.

Primarily a homemaker and farm wife, Chrystal was proud of the fact that she was part of the World War II homefront war effort.  During the war she worked at the Martin bomber plant and lived in an apartment in Bellevue, Nebraska.  She also worked seasonally at the Teachout Turkey Farm and Davis Seed Corn Company near Norwich in the early years of their marriage. In later years she sold Avon cosmetics.

A woman of many talents, Chrystal was known for being a very good cook and baker.  In fact she had a burgeoning business of making cakes for all life's special occassions, making countless wedding, graduation and birthday cakes for many in southwest Iowa out of her home. Among her other talents was quilting, making many quilts for her family and friends.  She taught quilting classes at Iowa Western Community College in Clarinda.  She enjoyed doing crafts of all kinds in her spare time and also loved to fish.  Chrystal enjoyed mowing and maintained her own farm acreage until giving it up at the age of 94. Chrystal was a longtime member of the Essex Faith Evangelical Covenant Church.

Many thanks go to Chrystal's brother, Norman and his wife Judy and their entire family as well as her neighbors, Terry and Debbie Dammann, for helping keep her in her home as long as possible. The Esaias' welcomed Chrystal into their home every Sunday for dinner as well as all the holidays.  Her special nieces and nephews took special care of things around the house before and after she entered Goldenrod.  Nephew, Mark, was instrumental in taking care of Chrystal's beloved cats while she was in the care center.

Preceding Chrystal in death were her parents; husband, Arvid; sons, Francis and Rodney; sisters, Delores Conley and Neva Summers.  Left to cherish her memory are her three grandchildren, Stephanie Vislisel and husband Tony of Cedar Rapids, IA, Leslie Brooks and husband Curtis of Farragut, IA and Adam Sandahl and wife Heidi of Essex, IA; seven great grandchildren; sister, Wyona Conrad of Clarksdale, MO; brother, Norman Esaias and wife Judy of Clarinda, IA;special nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.
