Charles Frederick (Fred) Samuelson, 89, of Essex, entered into eternal rest on June 22, 2019 at Elm Heights Care Center in Shenandoah.  

Celebration of life services for Fred will be held on Thursday, July 18, 2019 at 10:00 AM at St. John's Lutheran Church in Essex with Pastor Ann Alberts officiating.  The family will greet relatives and friends with visitation from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Wednesday, July 17, 2019 at Nishna Valley Funeral and Cremation Service in Shenandoah.  Inurnment will take place in the Essex Cemetery with military rites.  Lunch will be served and fellowship with the family will take place back at St. John's following the committal services.  Memorials are being directed to St. John's Lutheran Church or to the Essex Firefighters Association.


Charles Frederick (Fred) Samuelson, son of Charles Elmer Julius and Gunhild Olive Marcella (Newquist) Samuelson was born on November 23, 1929, in Shenandoah, Iowa.  He entered into eternal rest on Saturday morning, June 22, 2019 at Elm Heights Care Center in Shenandoah, Iowa at the age of 89 years, 6 months, 30 days.

His early life was spent growing up in Essex. Fred attended the Essex Community Schools, graduating from Essex High School with the Class of 1946 at the age of 16.

During the Korean Conflict, Fred enlisted in the United States Navy and also served in the Marines during which he served in Korea and was a Purple Heart recipient.  He served from September 1, 1950 through August 31, 1953.

On August 18, 1951, Fred was united in marriage to his true love, Colleen Faye Sederburg in Vallejo, California. They lived in Connecticut for a short time after their marriage before returning to Essex. This union was blessed with two children, Joey Lynn and Shari Ann.  Colleen passed away in 2014, after 62 years of marriage.

Fred worked as a rural mail carrier with the United States Postal Service at the Essex Post Office beginning in 1963 until his retirement in 1990. Fred was a longtime member of St. John's Lutheran Church, serving on the church board and singing in the choir, the Essex Community Club, was active in the Essex American Legion Post #333, serving on the color guard and was a 35 year member of the Essex Fire Department.  He enjoyed model cars and trucks, watching NASCAR, Sprint car races, and following Kansas City Chiefs Football.  Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and especially his grandchildren. 

Preceding Fred in death were his beloved wife, Colleen; his parents, Elmer and Olive Samuelson; Colleen’s parents, Sherman and Alma Sederburg; brothers-in-law, Duane (Ossie) Sederburg and Gene Sederburg; sister-in-law, Judy (Sederburg) Johnson; nephew, Darren Sederburg; niece, Deonne (Sederburg) Archer.  Left to cherish his memory are his two children, Joey Samuelson and wife Amy and Shari Bradfield and husband Chris, all of Essex; five grandchildren, Katy King of Essex, Jessica Niskin and husband Eli of Homestead, FL, Charles Bradfield and wife Kathryn of Shenandoah, Clinton Bradfield and wife Lara Kohler of  Rockville, MD,  and Colby Bradfield and Megan of Omaha, NE ; 11 great grandchildren; brother, Robert Samuelson and wife Jacky of Clarinda, IA; sisters-in-law, Diane Sederburg of Gladstone, MO and Joyce Kruse and Merrill of Shenandoah; brothers-in-law, Doug Johnson of Bethesda, IA and John Sederburg and Ellen of St. Peters, MO: numerous nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.
