Betty Jane Shaw

May 2, 1940 ~ September 18, 2018 (age 78)

Betty Jane (Rankin) Shaw, daughter of Jesse David (J. D.) Rankin, Jr. and Frances Lenore (May) Rankin, was born on May 2, 1940 in Omaha, Nebraska. She entered into eternal peace on Tuesday morning, September 18, 2018 at Nebraska Medicine - Omaha at the age of 78 years, 4 months, 16 days.

Her early life was spent growing up in Shenandoah, Iowa, where she attended the Shenandoah Community Schools. Betty Jane graduated from Shenandoah High School with the Class of 1958. Following high school, she attended the University of Arizona before returning to Shenandoah.

Family was always very important to Betty Jane. While her children were young, she focused on being a mother and homemaker first to her kids. Eventually, she joined the family seed and nursery business, becoming Owner and President of Earl May Seed & Nursery Company. For the past 31 years, she provided leadership and innovation to an ever changing industry.

On September 4, 1987, Betty Jane married the "love of her life", William E. (Bill) Shaw. They made their home in Shenandoah where they became partners in both business and life.
Very community minded, Betty Jane was an active member in the Garden Club and was past President. She was also a past member of Beta Sigma Phi and was an active member and past President of the Greater Shenandoah Historical Society. She was a current member of the Nishna Valley Christian Church and past member of the Congregational United Church of Christ and the First United Methodist Church.

One of the things that brought great joy to her was being able to travel with Bill. Her three favorite places to visit were Sanibel Island, Florida, Mercer, Wisconsin and Alaska. Betty Jane also loved to read and participate in the SWITG musicals and her bridge clubs. She was an awesome cook and was especially known amongst family and friends for her hot mustard and spiced pecans. She always loved to entertain family and friends. However, spending time with her grandchildren was tops on her list... She adored each one of her grandchildren and great grandson, cherishing every moment with them.

Preceding her in death were her parents; and sister, Diane Kidd. Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Bill Shaw of Shenandoah; son, Gordon Sherman and wife Kris of Shenandoah; daughter, Melinda Driskell and husband Damon of Holland, NE; three step-children, George Shaw and wife Angie of Shenandoah, Monte Shaw and wife Tina of West Des Moines, and Susan Shaw of Scottsdale, AZ; seven grandchildren, Ali Cox, Cassandra Driskell, Madeline Driskell, Jakob Sherman, Caroline Driskell, Eden Shaw and Max Shaw; great grandson, Michael Cox; other relatives and many friends.

A celebration of life funeral service will be held on Tuesday, September 25, 2018 at 10:00 AM at the Nishna Valley Christian Church (415 Fremont Ave) in Shenandoah with Pastor Jack Langley officiating. The family will greet relatives and friends with visitation from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Monday evening, September 24, at Nishna Valley Funeral and Cremation Service in Shenandoah. Burial will take place in Shenandoah's Rose Hill Cemetery.
