Obituary for Phyllis J. Richardson

Phyllis Jean Richardson was born on July 30, 1933 in Shenandoah, Iowa, the daughter of Myrtle May (Butler) and Carl Alfred Swanson. She grew up in Shenandoah and in Bingham, near Shenandoah. Phyllis graduated from the Shenandoah High School and attended the Omaha Business School, becoming a bookkeeper. Through the years, she worked as a bookkeeper at Gate City Steel in Omaha, Nebraska, was a bookkeeper at Tidy House in Shenandoah, worked as a laborer at Mount Arbor Nursery in Shenandoah, worked at Spurgeons in Shenandoah, was employed at CDS in Red Oak, Iowa, and made floral deliveries for Shenandoah Floral.

On January 17, 1959, Phyllis and Isaac Eugene Richardson were united in marriage in Las Vegas, Nevada and made their home in Coin, Iowa. She and Gene later moved to Lee Summit, Missouri, then Des Moines, Iowa, and finally back to Shenandoah where they lived near Porter’s Lake.

Phyllis attended several churches in Shenandoah; Christian Fellowship, Memorial Baptist, and Assembly of God. She enjoyed attending church and traveling, loved to read, and spend time with her family, attending family gatherings and the grandkids’ activities.

Following a courageous battle with cancer, Phyllis passed away September 5, 2017 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak, Iowa at the age of 84 years, 2 months, and 5 days. She was preceded in death by her parents; beloved husband Gene; sisters, Marjorie Bright and Verna Cain; niece Janet McKinnon; and nephews, Tom Bright and Carl Cain.

Left to cherish her memory are her four children, Karen Whitslar and husband Delbert of Essex, IA, Eric Richardson and wife Rena of Shenandoah, Greg Richardson and wife Arlene of Shenandoah, Lynette Lakey and husband Larry of Aldrich, MO; five grandchildren, Travis Richardson, Rachel Richardson, Aaron Whitslar, Ryan Richardson, and Colin Powles; great grandson Parker Richardson; brothers, John Swanson of Des Moines, IA and Jim Swanson of Shenandoah; cousin, Muriel Younggren of Hallock, MN; extended relatives; and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held on Friday, September 8, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at the Nishna Valley Funeral & Cremation Service in Shenandoah with Pastor Marcia Barnett officiating. Memories were shared by Karen Whitslar and Laurie Johnson. Honorary casket bearers were Travis Richardson, Rachel Richardson, Aaron Whitslar, Ryan Richardson and Colin Powles. Special music was "Because He Lives", "I Can Only Imagine" and "God Be With You Until We Meet Again". Registry attendant was Laurie Johnson. Private family burial took place in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Shenandoah. Memorials are being directed to the family.
