Obituary for Michael Dennis Overbey

Michael Dennis Overbey, son of William V. (Bill) and Mary Louise (Wallace) Overbey, was born on November 4, 1943 in Shenandoah, Iowa. He entered into eternal rest on Sunday, January 8, 2017 at Nebraska Medicine in Omaha, Nebraska following a brief illness at the age of 73 years, 2 months, 4 days.

Mike attended the Shenandoah Community Schools and graduated with the Class of 1961. During his high school years, Mike was involved in football and enjoyed being with his friends and classmates. He enjoyed attending his class reunions and felt that his classmates were very special.
Following graduation from Shenandoah High School, Mike attended college in Maryville, Missouri at NWMSU. With the Vietnam War escalating, Mike was drafted into the United States Army, however a broken leg in boot camp during exercises derailed his military service and he was granted a medical discharge.

During his lifetime, Mike attended college at Grand Island, Nebraska, Kansas City and Peru State College in Nebraska.

While working at Monford’s in Spencer, Iowa, Mike met Jean Ann Birchard. They were united in marriage in 1974 in Spencer. This union was blessed with two children, Michael Dean and Michelle Lynn. Mike and Jean later divorced.

Throughout the years, Mike worked for Omaha Steaks, The Corner Mart, Bluffs Run Casino, Harrah’s Casino, Central Surveys and the State of Iowa.

Mike had a lifelong passion for learning. He loved keeping up with politics and would frequently give you his opinion. He enjoyed reading about the Civil War and studying history. He thoroughly enjoyed watching documentaries. He especially loved spending time with his son watching football and baseball games--- especially his favorite teams, the Minnesota Vikings and the New York Yankees. Every weekend was spent watching sports of some sort with his son, Mikey. Mike thoroughly enjoyed talking to friends and inciting playful banter.

Preceding Mike in death were his mother in 1978; father in 2013; aunts, Martha Merriman and Patricia Gilbert; and niece, Marisol Overbey. He is survived by his son, Michael Dean Overbey and wife April of Shenandoah; daughter, Michelle Lynn Overbey of Dayton, OH; five grandchildren; one great grandson; brother, Sandy Overbey and wife Anne of Reston, VA; nephew, Christian Overbey of Denver, CO; other relatives and many friends.
