Obituary for Marcelyne J. Almquist

Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 16, 2018 at 2:00 PM at the Nishna Valley Funeral and Cremation Service in Shenandoah with Pastor Jim Crapson officiating. The family will greet relatives and friends with visitation Thursday evening, March 15, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the funeral home. Burial will take place in Rose Hill Cemetery. Memorials in Marcelyne's name are being directed to the College Springs Presbyterian Church or to Help A Heart.

Marcelyne Jeannette Almquist, daughter of Herbert Franklin and Hazel Leota (Adams) Stokes, was born on November 8, 1926 near Tabor, Iowa. She entered into the arms of her lord on Saturday morning, March 10, 2018 at Goldenrod Manor in Clarinda, Iowa at the age of 91 years, 4 months, 2 days.

Growing up, Marcelyne attended school in Shenandoah and Essex. On January 21, 1943, she was united in marriage to Marvin Almquist in Elkins, West Virginia. They were blessed with four children, Gary, Darla, Joyce and Kathe.

For several years during World War II, while Marvin served in the Army Air Corp, Marcelyne lived and worked in California. She returned to Shenandoah and after Marvin's return at the end of the war, they began life together farming near Essex and later near Coin. Upon retirement in 1984, they moved to an acreage outside of Shenandoah. They had a second home in Tucson, Arizona where they spent their winters.

Marcelyne was an active member of the Norwich Methodist Church until 2016 when she joined the College Springs Presbyterian Church. She was well known for her cooking an baking and was happiest when she could entertain and feed her large family. During her 91 years, she enjoyed square dancing, traveling and camping, golfing, following sports events of their children and later, their grandchildren, sewing and gardening. Her greatest joy came from being with her family, which grew to over 70.

Preceding her in death were her husband; daughter, Kathe Fichter; great-great grandson, Reeve Heuton; her parents; brothers, Robert and Wayne; and sisters, Arduth and Dorothy.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Gary Almquist and wife Marcia of Magnolia, TX, Darla Burch and husband Ed of Braddyville, IA, Joyce Vardaman and husband Randal of Sun Valley Lake at Elllston, IA; son-in-law, Fred Fichter of Randolph, IA; 12 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren; 10 great-great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; other relatives; and many friends.
