Obituary for Lois Joan Lekey

Lois Joan Lekey, daughter of Cecil Bert and Nellie (Walker) Elrod, was born on September 20, 1936 in St. Joseph, Missouri. She entered into the arms of her Lord and Savior on Friday, March 17, 2017 at Nebraska Medicine – Omaha at the age of 80 years, 5 months, 25 days.

Growing up, Lois lived in the Elmo, Missouri and Clarinda, Iowa areas. She graduated from Clarinda High School with the Class of 1954. On November 6, 1955, Lois was united in marriage to Cleatus Earl Lekey, Jr. in Clarinda. To this union five children were born, Cleatus Bert, Debora Earlene, Russell Scott, Tina and Timothy. Following their marriage they made their home in Clarinda until later moving to Shenandoah, Iowa.

Over the years, Lois was a loving homemaker to her husband and children. Outside of the home, Lois worked for Mount Arbor Nurseries for 15 years and last worked at Henry Field Seed & Nursery for 10 years. Known for her strong work ethic, Lois worked a variety of jobs at the nursery, floating wherever she was needed at the time. After retiring, she was able to focus more of her attention on those most important in her life, her family. Very much a family person, Lois was very proud of her children and loved to spend time with them and her grandchildren. Lois also enjoyed reading, sewing, knitting and going to garage sales. She very much enjoyed teaching her granddaughters how to cook and bake. She loved making new recipes she thought looked good and was especially adept at making cookies, cake and bread.

Preceding Lois in death were her parents; husband, Cleatus Earl Lekey, Jr.; son, Cleatus Bert Lekey; great granddaughter Deiya Ruth Berry; and brother, Donald Grant Elrod. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Debora Earlene Lekey of Shenandoah, Russell Scott Lekey and wife Linda of Rapid City, SD, Tina Foxx of Council Bluffs, IA and Timothy Lekey of Shenandoah; four grandchildren, Jennifer Lekey of Thurman, IA, Tamara Lekey and fiancé Tony Ward of Hamburg, IA, Julia Wright and husband Jacob of Hamburg, IA and Steve Hankins of Naples, FL; nine great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild on the way; sister, Dora Smith of Shenandoah; other relatives and many friends.

Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at 1:00 pm at the Hamburg Cemetery in Hamburg, Iowa. The family greet relatives and friends with visitation and viewing at Nishna Valley Funeral & Cremation Service in Shenandoah from 11:00 am to 12:00 Noon. Memorials are being directed to the family.
