Obituary for Joyce Lee Slauter

Joyce Lee (Pace) Slauter, daughter of John William and Lillian (Hall) Pace, was born on July 17, 1943 in Bakersfield, California. She unexpectedly passed away on Sunday, March 5, 2017 at the Shenandoah Medical Center at the age of 73 years, 7 months, 16 days.

For the first two years of her life, Joyce lived in Bakersfield before the family moved to Shenandoah, Iowa where she would lay down her roots. Joyce received her education in the Shenandoah Community School System, graduating from Shenandoah High School with the Class of 1961.

On December 27, 1961, Joyce was united in marriage to Ronald Richard Slauter in Nebraska City, Nebraska. Following their marriage they made their home in Shenandoah, where they raised their two children, Reginald Raymond John and Gina Marie.

For over 20 years, Joyce worked at Lake’s Nursery and Henry Fields. She also worked at D & G Ceramics and Mr. Movie. Joyce was a member of the First Christian Church in Shenandoah. In her spare time Joyce enjoyed fishing and golf in her earlier years and later turned into a Nebraska Football fan. Traveling, going to the casino, watching TV and talking on the phone to her family and friends also brought great joy to her in her later years.

Preceding Joyce in death were her husband of 49 years, Ronald Slauter, on 09/09/2010; parents; two sisters, Patty Pace and twin sister, Judy Pace; great grandson, Cason Morton; and a sister-in-law, Mary Jo Slauter.

Survivors include her two children, Reggie Slauter of Clarinda, IA and Gina Tomkinson and husband Matt of New Market, IA; granddaughter, Rachel Morton and husband Scott and great grandson, Aiden Morton of Clarinda, IA; sister, Connie Berrier and husband Tom of Shenandoah; nieces, Wendy Palmer and husband Lyle of Shenandoah and Kim Burns and husband Randy of Essex; nephew, Tommy Berrier and Ashley of Shenandoah; great nieces and nephews, Mikayla, Courtney and Katelyn Palmer, Koreen Polsley, Brooke, Tori, Tyler and Kayla, Aaron and Regan Burns; great great nieces and nephews, Nick, Luke, Lilly and Emmy Berrier, Zeke Polsley and Dominick, Hayden, Evan and Quinn Burns; her dog and faithful companion, Abby; other relatives and many friends.

Celebration of life memorial services will be held on Friday, March 10, 2017 at 10:30 AM at Nishna Valley Funeral & Cremation Service in Shenandoah with Rev. Rick Sleyster officiating. The family will greet relatives and friends with visitation from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home. A memorial is being is established in Joyce's name. Inurnment will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Shenandoah.
