Obituary for Hayden C. Jones

Hayden Clair Jones, 98, of Shenandoah, Iowa, entered into the arms of his Lord on Sunday morning, February 26, 2017 at his home.

Celebration of life funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 2, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Shenandoah with Pastor Humberto Gonzalez officiating. The family will greet relatives and friends with visitation from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday. March 1, 2017 at the Nishna Valley Funeral & Cremation Service in Shenandoah. Burial will take place in the Rose Hill Cemetery with military rites accorded by the Shenandoah American Legion Post #88. Memorials in Hayden's name are being directed to the Shenandoah First United Methodist Church. Nishna Valley Funeral and Cremation Service of Shenandoah in charge of arrangements.


Hayden Clair Jones, son of Howell Pugh and Grace Belle (Darnell) Jones, was born on December 8, 1918 in Carroll, Nebraska. He grew up in Carroll, attended District 18, a one room country school, and graduated from the Carroll High School in 1935, at the age of 16 years old. Hayden attended Wayne State College in Wayne, Nebraska, graduating in 1939. He worked as a high school math teacher and basketball coach in Thayer, Nebraska. Hayden served in the United States Air Force from 1941 to 1946. He worked at Safeway Stores in Missouri Valley and Onawa, Iowa and in Omaha, Nebraska, retiring in 1981.

Hayden was united in marriage to Elaine Berniece Lundberg on June 15, 1942 in Albany, Georgia. Following their marriage, they made their home in Sebring, Florida. The couple was blessed with three children, Robert, Janelle and Douglas.

Hayden was a member of the Methodist Church in Carroll, Omaha, and Shenandoah, Iowa, and a member of the Shenandoah Rotary since 1982, the American Legion, and the Coffee Club held at the Sanctuary in Shenandoah.

Hayden enjoyed golf, basketball, woodworking and reading. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother, and a good friend to all who knew him.

Hayden passed away at his Shenandoah home on February 26, 2017, at the age of 98 years, 2 months, and 18 days. He was preceded in death by his parents; beloved wife Elaine; sister Lila Mae Slover; and half brothers, Ellis Hooker Lewis and Thomas Wilson Lewis.

Hayden is survived by his children, Robert Jones and wife Glenda of Marietta, GA, Janelle Schieffer and husband Tom of Millington, TN, and Douglas Jones of Lenexa, KS; four grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; half sister Rita Goss of Crowley, TX; half brother William Robert Lewis, Sr of Joplin, MO; extended relatives; and many friends.
