Obituary for Harold Keith Phipps

Harold Keith Phipps, 93, of Farragut, Iowa entered into eternal rest on Thursday morning, December 15, 2016 at the Elm Heights Care Center in Shenandoah.

Celebration of life memorial services will be held on Thursday, December 22, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at the Farragut United Methodist Church with Pastor Bruce Hauswirth and Phil Wing officiating. Military rites will be accorded by the Shenandoah American Legion Post 88. Private family inurnment will be in the Farragut Cemetery. Memorials are being directed to the American Cancer Society in Harold's name. Nishna Valley Funeral and Cremation Service of Shenandoah in charge of arrangements.

Harold Keith Phipps, of Shenandoah, Iowa, passed away on December 15, 2016 at the Elm Heights Care Center, at the age of 93 years.

Harold was born in Farragut, Iowa on November 22, 1923, to Howard Ortel and Lillian B. (Pierce) Phipps, where he spent the early years of his life helping on the farm. He graduated from Farragut High School and went to further his education at Tarkio College for 9 weeks, but returned to the farm to help.

Harold was united in marriage to Arlene Mae Wetherell on March 19, 1944 in Hiawatha, Kansas. To this union four daughters were born, Cheryl Dianne, Marsha Lanette, Glenda Sue, and Vicki Lynn.

Harold entered into the United States Marine Corp on May 31, 1944, where he served in Iwo Jima and in the Pacific Theater. He was wounded and returned to the States and was honorably discharged on December 13, 1945. Upon his return to home, Harold helped on the farm and also worked at Imperial Chemical Farragut Co-Op. In the mid 60s, he went to Omaha to find work with Peter Kiewit, working on the new Interstate roads being built through Omaha. He held a variety of different jobs while in Omaha, with Arlene moving there in 1971. Harold retired as a fuel transport driver with Farm Service in 1992.

Harold was a member of the Benson American Legion in Omaha for several years. He enjoyed square dancing with the Pairs and Squares Dance Club in Shenandoah, playing ball with his daughters, loved to play cribbage with his sons-in-law and grandsons, and loved woodworking and crafts. Harold enjoyed traveling and spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Harold was preceded in death by his parents; Ortel and Lillian Phipps; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Amy Wetherell Germar and Louis Germar; wife Arlene Mae Phipps; brother Howard “George” Phipps; brothers-in-law, Willard Wetherell, Donald Wetherell, and Robert Boese; sisters-in-law, Ruth Nadine Boese Dickson, Lois Wetherell, JoAnn Wetherell, and Patty Wetherell; sons-in-law, Arnold Ferraguti and Alfred Donahue; nieces, Sharon Wetherell and Robin Boese; and nephew Kevin Boese.

Harold is survived by his daughters, Cheryl (Larry) Nenneman of Sidney, IA and Albuquerque, NM, Marsha Ferraguti of Billings, MT, Glenda Phipps of Shenandoah, and Vicki (Toby) Valarde of Albuquerque, NM; nine grandchildren, Jay (Paula) Nenneman, Leslie (Tom) O’Connell, Chad (Brandi) Ferraguti, Jason Ferraguti, Patrick B. (Debbie) Donahue, Craig Donahue, Donni (Jennifer) Donahue, Kimberly (Quentin) Yost, and Derek (Alisha) Jones; twenty-eight great grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; many relatives; and friends.
