Obituary for Gwyneth Ann Whitehill

Gwyneth “Gwyn” Whitehill, daughter of Paul Martin and Esther Ellis (Twaddle) Denney, was born on December 1, 1933 at Shambaugh, Iowa. She passed away on Monday, August 20, 2018 at Elm Heights Care Center in Shenandoah, Iowa at the age of 84 years, 8 months, 19 days.

Growing up, Gwyn lived on a farm near Burlington Junction, Missouri with her parents and five brothers. She graduated Valedictorian from Burlington Junction High School in 1952.

In 1954, Gwyn married the love of her life, Duane Whitehill. Gwyn and Duane moved to the family farm north of Shenandoah, Iowa where they raised their four children. The farm was a family affair as all of them were involved in some aspect; planting, harvest, chores, livestock and more. Her children, along with Gwyn, were involved with 4-H. Gwyn was a Page County 4-H leader as well as a member of the Page County Fair Board for many years. While her children were active in school, Gwyn loved to watch them participate in their many activities and sporting events. She was their biggest fan. When her children were older, Gwyn went to work for Four Season’s Fabric. She had a passion for sewing and was a remarkable seamstress. Later, she worked for Howard’s Clothing & Sporting Goods and did alterations for Ladies Apparel and privately. Gwyn’s talents were not limited to sewing as she was an amazing cook and baker. She enjoyed spending time in the kitchen and blessing others with these delicious treats.

Gwyn was an active member of her church and community. She and Duane raised their family in the Summit United Methodist Church. Gwyn served as the President of the Ladies Aid, and was a member of the Board of Parrish, a member of Shenandoah Hospital Auxiliary and more.

Gwyn was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. It is her family that brought her the greatest joys and blessings in life. Along with the happiness Gwyn experienced during her journey, a great deal of hardship and heartache was felt as she lost her three oldest children to an accident and illness. She fought through this grief and was a true example of perseverance and grace. She continued to ambitiously live on and love her family and friends. Gwyn walked in a strong faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. She instilled and taught her family and others the importance of family values, work ethic, acceptance and strength. Her legacy will forever be alive in the many hearts of those who were so fortunate to call her wife, mom, grandma and friend.

Gwyn is survived by her husband, Duane of 64 years; daughter, Mindy (Brian) Rice;
son-in-law, Dan Arend; six grandsons, Tim (Sarah) Arend, Tony (Darla) Arend, T.J. (Nilda) Whitehill, Kalon Whitehill, Kade (Bobbi) Whitehill and Cory (Nicole) Rice; four granddaughters, Emily (Cory) Miller, Annie (Nathan) Klitzing, Erin Rice and Shelby Rice; brother, Jan Denney; 13 Great Grandchildren; several brothers-in-law; sisters-in-law; nieces, nephews & many friends.

Gwyn was preceded in death by her daughter, Jolene Arend; two sons, Rodney Whitehill & Kelly Whitehill; parents, Paul & Esther Denney; four brothers, Kenneth Denney, Jim Denney, Joe Denney & Randy Denney; five brothers-in-law, Kenneth Whitehill, Darryl Whitehill, Boyd Whitehill, Jim Whitehill and Bob Whitehill.
